Instead of the hard pavement, maybe grass (or porous recycled soft ground cover) could be installed. It reduces injuries and helps by letting the rain soak into the ground (instead of in the sewer system). The flowers along the border could add beauty to the place as well as attract wildlife (like butterflies, bees and birds).
